Swimsuit Edition: Crop Tankini

Brands that sell these: Urban Outfitters – www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/index.jsp ; Pacsun –  www.pacsun.com

The crop tankini. You can also look it up on google as the long bustier, crop bikini, etc. I’m basically describing to the best of my abilities a swimsuit top that resembles the infamous crop top adorned by teens everywhere. Instead of  wearing a boring halter top or one piece, try the crop tankini. It provides a bit of “modesty” in the midst of string bottoms and push up bikinis.

The style isn’t too popular right now, but it’s one of those things that’s slowly creeping into distinguished stores. Fun fact: swimsuits are made of nylon, cotton, spandex, and polyester. In terms of functionality, crop tankinis provide more support and lessen the chance of the top falling off. Also, it covers part of the stomach, creating a slimming look.

This style would be ideal for any setting that involves swimming, but I would wear this instead of a revealing bikini if I’m out with family or on a class trip. Obviously, this is only for girls. A suggested look is a tribal print crop top bikini with solid low rise b0ttoms. The trick is to take one color from the pattern and find a bottom with the same color. For coverups, wear a see through beige dress made up of a lace or doily fabric. Finish off with some strappy sandals.

Some great bottom types you could pair this style with are low rise shorts and cheeksters. Some variations of crop tankinis are: bustier, long sleeved, thick straps, short sleeve cropped shirt, flowy crop, and racerback. Be sure to try out this trend if you want to get ahead of the game this summer.

TL;DR: Try out the crop tankini if you want a touch of modesty in your summer look.

Tea Length Skirts

Tea Length: a style where the hem falls between the knee and the calf.

Tea length skirts are seriously all the rage right now. The saying that fashion is going backwards is definitely true in this case. Tea Length has been seen way back in the late 1800’s in England and the US. Now, people wear it to look old fashioned or modest yet still casual.

Patterns and fabrics all vary, so the sky’s the limit. But, the style is always flowy or pleated, as a skin tight tea length would probably restrict ones ability to walk. As shown in the picture, you can wear a matching crop top or a sweater with the skirt since it’s so versatile. You’ve probably hear of tea length wedding dresses, but brides usually only choose this style at outdoor weddings or for laid-back weddings. Tea Length is also an option for prom if you’re into that.

Again, this outfit is only for the ladies. Envision women in the 20’s when styling a tea length skirt. I suggest tucking in a muted and thinly striped button up into a solid tea length skirt. Make sure the blouse has a collar so you can layer over a pastel or white sweater. Then finish the look with some office-esqe pumps and a watch of choice.

The best season to wear these is in the fall or spring, but you could also put it off in the winter. If your style is vintage or elegant than this is the look for you. But if you’re edgy or preppy, then some modifications could help to implement the tea length. Edgy: pair a cropped bomber with a faux leather skirt. Preppy: take a wild pattered skirt and pair it with a bustier of choice.

TL;DR: Channel your inner old-school and try out the tea length.

Pencil Crop Top Set

Brands that sell these: For Love & Lemons – www.forloveandlemons.com; ASOS – www.us.asos.com

Celebrities like Zoey Deutch and all the Kardashians are rocking this specific style. The title is pretty straightforward, a pencil skirt and a matching crop top. I’ve seen different variations of this, such as a skater skirt instead of a pencil skirt, but it is this particular style that’s flooding the fashion scene.

The fabric can be made out of almost anything, cotton, lace on top of silk, and even thick wool. Patterns vary from solid to plaid, tribal to floral. Typically, there aren’t any add-ons to the fabric, but I have seen scalloped hems or lace overlap. Pencil skirt and crop top sets can look flattering on any body shape, but it just depends on how thin your fabric is. If you you prefer more coverage and concealment, opt for a thicker fabric. But if you honestly don’t care or if youre body confident, try cotton.

Obviously, guys can’t wear this style, and it’s not really for all girls either. By no means is this set for a professional setting, despite the pencil skirt part. People usually wear this set for a night out and for special occasions. A suggested way to rock this: pair a pastel floral printed set with minimal accessories like a single statement necklace or single chunky bracelet. Then top it off with strappy nude heels (to counteract the loudness of the outfit).

This set is best worn in the spring, summer, and fall, with patterns changing accordingly. The look is best worn without a jacket, but if you must, then opt for a crochet loose sweater for softer sets or a structured blazer for edgier sets. This surely means that matching pencil crop top sets are one of those versatile, all-over-the-fashion-spectrum type of pieces. Uber-girly girls can wear these as well as punk-rock fanatics. Seriously, why aren’t you going out and buying one right now?

TL;DR: Pencil skirt plus a matching crop top. Very fashion forward but soo worth it.

Loose off-the-shoulder tops are getting popular this year, as their boho style pairs perfectly with music festivals such as Coachella and SXSW. It’s been around since I can remember, but only recently have clothing companies been implementing a modern touch to the style, creating the next upcoming fashion trend. The look is typically boho/western chic, but a change in fabric can turn it into any style for any occasion.

This type of clothing is usually made out of cotton or lace and comes in a variety of colors. Off-the-shoulders are just for girls, unfortunately. I suggest wearing a flowy white off-the-shoulder paired with some high waisted shorts and brown leather boots. Wrap bracelets and a flower crown would add a nice touch, like the lady pictured above.

Off-the-shoulders are typically worn in the spring and summer, since the shoulders are getting some breathing room. It might be hard to find at this point but once you see one, buy it immediately and watch the compliments flood in. Remember, always dress according to your body shape and preference. If you aren’t excited about baring the entire upper part of your body, opt out of this trend. But if you love this and want to try it out, I highly suggest you do! You end up looking like a Greek goddess no joke.

TL;DR: Off-the-shoulder = boho goddess = go to the mall and buy this NOW.

Drop-Waist Peplum

This idea is a mix between two fashion trends that appeared in 2013. Peplum is a short flared, gathered, or pleated strip of fabric that is traditionally attached at the waist of a woman’s dress or blouse. Drop-waist is a style of waistline on a dress cut so that the seam is positioned at the hips rather than the waist. Put the two together, and you’ve got dozens of women lined up in front of department stores in order to keep up to date with the ever changing world of fashion. Drop waist was a style popular among flapper women in the 1920’s, and the comeback of this trend is slowly creeping in. But now they’re putting a whole new twist on it by incorporating peplum into the equation.

I don’t have one of these, but I think they are absolutely adorable! They seem to suit smaller figures, though, as they don’t cinch at the waist or flatter any curves you may have. But, if you like it, wear it! The #1 rule of fashion is to only wear clothes that make you happy. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.

Sentimentality aside, drop-waist peplum can come in both blouse or dress form. They make the wearer look more youthful and innocent, giving a doll-like appearance. If you need to hide any of that dreadful bloating, the drop-waist fortunately can hide anything and everything. Companies use all kinds of fabrics, colors, and patterns.

This trend is typically for girls, sorry. I suggest pairing a like pink drop waist dress with grey knee-high socks and burgundy wedge oxfords. If your style isn’t as vintage-esque, then I suggest a black drop-waist peplum blouse with leather or darkwash jeans and a white blazer or bomber.

Prices vary greatly depending on the retailer and they’re not too popular in regular department stores yet. Hopefully, we’ll see these types of outfits in time for the summer!

TL;DR: pephem = super versatile and super trendy.

Kimono Tops

Brands that sell these: Brandy Melville – www.brandymelville.com; Topshop – www.topshop.com

Okay, these things are just gorgeous. I don’t know if it’s because of the oriental vibe or what, but I cannot wait to rock one of these. I recently bought one but haven’t gotten around to wearing it. I wonder why? *cough**cough* i only wear a uniform everyday *cough**cough.* I digress. Kimono tops resemble shawls or giant scarves with holes for your arms. Essentially, they are wraps that add extra style to your outfit.

Kimono tops can be made up of a variety of fabrics, like chiffon or cotton. (kimono jackets exist too but they are made of sturdier fabric.) The pattern can also vary, but they typically have flowers, resembling actual kimonos. Some have tassels lining the bottom, also. They look flattering on any body shape, so don’t worry. but if you’re a guy or girl, they’re worn a bit differently:

Guy: To be honest, guys don’t really wear kimono tops but at least a few do. If you have an inkling about trying these out, I suggest picking a solid, dark color, such as navy or black. Then pair it with a sold t-shirt, tank top, or collared shirt. Finally, finish the look with some dark denim pants.

Girl: These are best worn with a white or pastel colored tank top or t-shirt, high waisted shorts, and some combat boots. if you want to look dressier, I suggest a dress with a solid color (to balance out the pattern in the already eye-catching top) and mid-length (to contrast the flowy-ness of the top.)

This is best and most worn in the spring, so hurry and buy one before everyone starts wearing it! If you haven’t already noticed, they don’t provide any warmth whatsoever so sorry. Depending on the fabric, tops like these can run from $30-$90 bucks. Try this trend out, you won’t regret it!

TL;DR: Buy a kimono top and be ultra trendy for the spring season.

Midi Rings

Brands that sell these: Brandy Melville- www.brandymelvilleusa.com; Forever21- forever21.com

To be honest, I have a love/hate relationship with rings. I believe I have this curse where my rings fall off at the most inopportune times. (I lost my expensive ring in the grass twice and had to search around for hours to retrieve it.) Midi rings sound like my worst nightmare. But, I have to talk about it since they are getting popular.

Baby V wearing a midi

Midi rings are essentially just small rings made to fit between the upper joints of your finger instead of between the knuckle and middle joint. They allow ring fanatics to wear even more rings all over their hands. My opinions aside, midi rings offer a modern take on jewelry and actually look attractive on the hand. I prefer thin midi rings because of their elegance, but they come in all shapes and sizes.

If you have fat fingers though, you may have a hard time since some retailers have a “one size fits all” thing. But, you can always just…buy a small ring? They are pretty much child sized rings so just grab a size 5 ring and wow you have your own midi ring.

I don’t own any midi rings, like I said, so I don’t have much to say. This is geared towards women (since its jewelry lol) but guys who enjoy wearing rings might see this trend expand to men’s accessories in the distant future. At F21, they’re super cheap, around 2-4 bucks. At other places they might be a bit more pricey but for sure cheaper than the normal sized rings they sell. Anyways, I hope to try these out for myself soon.

TL;DR: Hop on the jewelry bandwagon and pick up some midi rings!

Bushy Brows

Cara Delevingne

Another beauty trend that’s been as popular as “the bob” since the end of last year is strong eyebrows. This is more of an admiration though, since it’s mostly celebrities that have been rocking the thick brows. Some popular examples are model Cara Delevingne, actress Lily Collins, and actor/ singer Darren Criss. In their cases, big brows are what identify and separate them from other celebrities.

Majority of humans don’t have perfectly full yet thin and maintained brows. It’s a chronic struggle amongst women, especially. Those with sparse brows may have a difficult time achieving this looking on a daily basis, but those with wild brows may be in luck. For the surprisingly more fortunate, you will be thrilled to know that you don’t have to spend an hour tweezing your caterpillars every 3 days. With the gradual acceptance of bushy brows, now you can do the bare minimum and then end up looking like a fashion icon.

Andrew Garfield

Personally, I think it depends both on personality and style, but not so much facial features. Usually, any woman who is confident in her personal style can pull off the strong brows whereas someone with less of a fashion identity might come off as unkempt. And, when you have the brows, you need to know how to rock them. That’s where confidence comes into play. You’re dealing with a fashion statement, so being shy about it will make people think you aren’t taking care of your brows. This probably sounds like an in depth analysis on something as trivial as eyebrows, but it takes serious skill to pull off such a bold look.

The gorgeous Lily Collins

As said before, even those with sparse brows can achieve this look, but it does take a little more effort. The trick is to thicken and darken all over, but concentrate from mid brow to the front and then taper from the second half of the arch down.  If you’re blond, test out a variety of colors from a grayish tint to a deep brown. For brunettes, stick between a few shades lighter that your hair color to a few shades down. Remember, too dark might look fake, especially if your brows are sparse to begin with.

After you find your color, there are a variety of ways to apply that color and thickness to your brows. A complete brow regimen consists of a brow powder; pencil; or marker, and over it a brow gel or wax. Small strokes are key to making the brows look natural.

In conclusion, it’s all trial and error, but I hope my tips help.

The equally gorgeous Darren Criss

Unless you’re metrosexual, makeup is not up your alley. Most men don’t take care of their brows all, and the rest probably only trim the hairs once in a blue moon. This article is mostly just reassurance, that if you have thick brows like in the picture above, you’re actually fashionable! (WOW!)

My fave Lucy Hale

Thick brows are not for everyone, but if you manage to try it out, you’ll find yourself with an overall youthful appearance. Thin arched brows exhibit maturity while soft bushy eyebrows are cute and fresh. Considering Cara and Lily pretty much got famous because of their brows, I suggest trying this out if you want to be a trendsetter this season.

TL;DR: Go for thick, dark brows this season if you want to look young and fashionable.

(this pic is old but omg i found a young katie holmes in overalls so perfect)

Brands that sell these: Forever21 (their selection shifts pretty often so you probs have to wait until fall for overalls to come back sry) and i guess department stores? [this section is starting to not make sense.]

Overalls are overall pretty awesome *laughter*.  They’re great for any size or gender, providing for a laid back, tomboyish vibe that makes it look like you put zero effort but still managed to look fashionable.

I understand why people might not like these. They aren’t too practical if you need to go to the bathroom, for starters. And if you don’t wear it correctly, you will end up looking like you tried too hard (or like a cowboy). But if you learn how to wear them properly, i.e. wear the right clothing underneath, you can be the definite head-turner at the local coffee shop.

how artzy

Considering people will be staring at you when you wear them (are overalls THAT foreign to people idk), I don’t suggest wearing these on a daily basis. Try to implement this staple piece every now and then, especially in spring and fall. Overall shorts are cute on girls and overall pants are great on both guys and girls.

For dem girls: Overalls can be overdressed with a printed collar button-up underneath, a statement necklace, and some boots or under-dressed with a white tank top, a scarf, and some comfy sandals. As shown above on the runway models, overalls are chic in any color or length.

For dem b0ys: I know its a finer line for boys, since one wrong move and you could end up looking like a plumber or cowboy. BUT, you could also look like a dapper, European-esque, vintage, pretty boy with an amazing fashion sense and a row of women on each arm. Jokes aside, guys should wear overalls more often. I suggest pairing it with a long sleeved shirt and some oxfords. Keep it simple and you’ll go a long way.

If you dont like overalls, you could always go for clip-on suspenders. They do the trick and are easier to put on.

Celebrities and Asian people, two things that I will include in every post.

Since this is such a general trend, I can’t list a specific price, but, good quality overalls range from $40-$150 (denim is expensive yo). As stated before, overalls are tremendously versatile and can be worn for special occasions (just wear a different fabric like leather or polyester) or for everyday (the looser, more ripped, more faded = the more laid-back). Go out and buy a pair. You won’t regret it!

TL;DR: Be comfy and causal in these on-trend overalls. ’nuff said.

Bob Haircut

Entering into spring 2014, the latest hair trend is now shifting from long tresses to short, playful hair. Fashion icons like Lily Collins and Emma Roberts have recently gone public with this new hairstyle and have gotten every tabloid and fashion magazine publishing an article about it.

I personally am too afraid to try the new trend myself, but have thought about it many times. The pluses of having short hair compared to my currently super long hair are using up less shampoo and conditioner, having healthier looking hair, and not having my hair get caught on everything. While I am a bit reluctant to jump into the new season with this style, I bet I’ll eventually give in.

All high-end hairstylists agree, the bob is what all celebrities are asking for since 2014 has started. the trick is to start with a long bob and ease your way into shorter hair. You might regret it if you cut the hair too short on the first try. Also, body and volume are key and add to the mobility of the hair.

I highly suggest high schoolers and college students try the bob, since it’s low maintenance and gives off a carefree and flirty vibe. All the girls at my school are currently sporting extra long, natural hair, but chances are that everyone will have a bob by the end of the year.

TL;DR: Get a bob, it’s what all the celebrities are trying this season.
